Information on Luigi Mangione
The suspect arrested in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was identified as 26-year-old Luigi Mangione. Here is a collection of information regarding Luigiās personal life and subsequent criminal proceedings.
Luigi Mangione comes from a rich family who has deep roots within Baltimore. He is cousins with Republican state lawmaker Nino Mangione. Luigi was valedictorian at the upper-class Gilman prep school in Baltimore. He then earned bachelorās and masterās degrees in computer engineering at the University of Pennsylvania and was a teaching assistant at Stanford University. Luigi worked for TruCar as a data engineer for four years and, at some point, joined a surfing community in Hawaiāi. While surfing, he suffered a severe back injury, which required surgery. It was then he claimed to have struggled to get adequate care and had to exaggerate his condition to get proper treatments. In November of 2024, his mother reported him missing to the police as none of his close family had heard from him.
Shooting
On December 4th, 2024, at 6:44 am, outside the New York Hilton Midtown, the suspectĀ shotĀ Thompson three times, killing him. The masked suspect fled immediately on an e-bike going to Central Park. The suspect is seen leaving Central Park on the bike, getting into a taxi, and traveling to a bus station, where he left the city. In the search, the bullet casings had the words ādelay, deny, deposeā written on them. Law enforcement in Central Park found a backpack matching the suspects containing just a jacket and monopoly money.
Arrest
A felony arrest warrant was issued in New York City on Monday, November 9th, 2024. Mangione is charged with second-degree murder and four gun charges.
After five days on the run, Mangione was caught at a McDonalds restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, over 280 miles away. An employee allegedly recognized him based on the images circulating and called the police. The person who reported Mangione likely wonāt receive the $60,000 reward because they contacted 911 rather than the FBI tip line. Mangione was carrying a suppressed 3D-printed pistol reported to be used in the shooting. Mangione also had a fake New Jersey driverās license matching the one he used to check into the hostel in Manhattan.
Manifesto
A 262-word note, known as āthe Manifesto,ā was found by law enforcement and later distributed to various news organizations such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, and NBC, but it was not released. It was leaked and published by independent journalist,
, who said that corporate media refused to publish this note either because of internal policy or due to a deal with law enforcement. Klippenstein is not certain that those media organizations have a picture of the written note or just received the transcript from the FBI. There is still a small possibility that the FBI fabricated this note, but Klippenstein says that multiple sources, including the Daily Beast, confirmed its authenticity.āTo the Feds, I'll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn't working with anyone. This was fairly trivial: some elementary social engineering, basic CAD, a lot of patience. The spiral notebook, if present, has some straggling notes and To Do lists that illuminate the gist of it. My tech is pretty locked down because I work in engineering so probably not much info there. I do apologize for any strife of traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming. A reminder: the US has the #1 most expensive healthcare system in the world, yet we rank roughly #42 in life expectancy. United is the [indecipherable] largest company in the US by market cap, behind only Apple, Google, Walmart. It has grown and grown, but as our life expectancy? No the reality is, these [indecipherable] have simply gotten too powerful, and they continue to abuse our country for immense profit because the American public has allowed them to get away with it. Obviously the problem is more complex, but I do not have space, and frankly I do not pretend to be the most qualified person to lay out the full argument. But many have illuminated the corruption and greed (e.g.: Rosenthal, Moore), decades ago and the problems simply remain. It is not an issue of awareness at this point, but clearly power games at play. Evidently I am the first to face it with such brutal honesty.ā
In this note, he also mentions a āspiral notebookā that couldāve been used to plan the shooting or contains more evidence of a motive. So far, this notebook has not been found. Mangioneās motive almost certainly has to do with his experience of having a gruesome back injury that required surgery and thus dealing with the American healthcare system.
Social Media
Most talked about is his Good Reads account, which provides a look into his philosophy and underlying ideological motive. Mangione logged many books and had a long list of favorite quotes. Notable book reviews listed:
Industrial Society and Its Future ā by Ted Kaczynski
Clearly written by a mathematics prodigy. Reads like a series
of lemmas on the question of 21st century quality of life.
It's easy to quickly and thoughtless write this off as the
manifesto of a lunatic, in order to avoid facing some of the
uncomfortable problems it identifies. But it's simply
impossible to ignore how prescient many of his predictions
about modern society turned out.
He was a violent individual - rightfully imprisoned - who
maimed innocent people. While these actions tend to be
characterized as those of a crazy luddite, however, they are
more accurately seen as those of an extreme political
revolutionary.

AnĀ archiveĀ of hisĀ RedditĀ account shows his interest in technology, fitness, and self-help, along with details of his time in Hawaiāi. Most importantly, it documents his history of back pain.
A look at his Substack account shows he has been active this year as late as July. Mangione has liked articles from Nate Silver and Sam Harris. Also, on Substack, Magione allegedlyĀ interactedĀ multiple times with writerĀ Gurwinder, who puts out center-right-wing articles about technology, philosophy, and politics. There was at least one comment on Gurwinderās newsletter in April 2024, along with Twitter replies.
Gurwinder, in a tweet,Ā claimedĀ that he personally spoke to Mangione in a two-hour video call. Mangioneās Substack account corroborates at least the fact that he follows Gurwinder.
Gurwinder also claimed to have two more emails from Mangione. The first discusses a potential video meeting and āNPCās in Japanā sent in April. The second email from May is regarding the meeting, which had something to do with āintergenerational trauma.ā Gurwinder describes Mangione as ādeeply curious.ā
Here, Gurwinder again praises Mangione, describing him as ālucid, relaxed, and cheerfulā during their two-hour discussion.
A scrape of his Twitter account shows interest in technology and center-right-wing philosophy content. The account only has 37 total tweets or replies, along with over a hundred ārandom tweets.ā On his profile, his banner is an x-ray image of his spine post-operation.
Allegedly, on aĀ YouTubeĀ page, his name had a live stream countdown titled āThe Truth.ā The video ultimately did not play when the countdown ended, and YouTube has taken down the account. This was likely faked, as Mangione would have no way to start the livestream countdown in police custody, however the account could be legit since it was taken down shortly after.
A screenshot of his LinkedIn page shows that he worked as a data engineer at TruCar for four years, moving up to a tier-three position.
A user screen recorded his Instagram page,e which hasnāt been active since 2021.
There was a note found from a Google Drive link on his social media documenting research on his spondylolisthesis lower back condition from 2019. Mangione also worked on game development at his University.
Other notable accounts owned by Mangione are GitHub and Giters.
